Ingredients:

  • 2 (1-1/2 lb.) flat iron steaks
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 shallot, diced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup Cabernet Sauvignon (recommended BV Napa Cabernet)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Add the canola oil and swirl to coat the bottom of the pan. Season the steaks with salt and pepper on both sides, add them to the skillet, and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side until nicely browned.

  3. Transfer the steaks to a baking sheet and roast in the preheated oven for another 6 to 8 minutes for medium-rare or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of a steak registers 135 degrees F (60 degrees C). Remove from oven and let rest.

  4. In the same skillet, add diced shallot and sauté until tender. Pour over Cabernet Sauvignon and beef broth, bring to a simmer and let reduce by half.

  5. Remove from heat and whisk in unsalted butter until melted.

  6. Slice rested steaks against the grain into thin strips and serve with Cabernet sauce drizzled on top.

Notes:

To get delicious flavor out of your flat iron steaks, season them with grill seasoning or a dry rub marinade or balsamic steak marinade, they will certainly make your steak outstanding.

For cooking, a cast iron is great for getting that nice sear but a non-stick pan works fine too.

If Iron steak is not available in your area, you can use hanger steak or ribeye steak as a substitute.

This recipe can be paired with a sturdy red wine like a Cabernet Sauvignon or Bordeaux blend to complement the richness of the steak and enhance the flavor of the savory Cabernet sauce.

If you’re feeling experimental or just want to mix up the flavors in this recipe, here are some substitutions and variations you can try.

– Wine: While Cabernet Sauvignon is recommended for the wine sauce, you can try using a dry red wine such as Merlot or Pinot Noir. You can also use white wine if you prefer a lighter sauce.

– Cut of steak: If you can’t find flat iron steak or prefer a different cut, other steaks that work well include hanger steak, ribeye steak, strip steak, and beef tenderloin. Keep in mind that cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of the steak.

– Sauce ingredients: To add some complexity to the sauce, consider adding demi-glace or balsamic vinegar for a tangy flavor. You can also use beef broth instead of chicken broth for a meatier taste.

– Seasonings: Instead of grill seasoning, try using your favorite blend of herbs or spices. Freshly ground black pepper and garlic powder are also great additions.

– Cooking method: If you don’t have access to a stovetop or grill, you can still make this recipe. Simply cook the steaks in the oven at 400°F for about 15-20 minutes or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Then prepare the sauce separately on the stovetop before serving.

When serving this delicious flat iron steak with cabernet sauce, you’ll want to make sure that the dish gets the right pairing to bring out its flavors, colors, and textures. So how do you pair this dish?

Firstly, because this dish has a bold taste, a wine with bold flavor is an ideal pairing. Cabernet Sauvignon is a good choice. The combination of the steak and the cabernet sauce would blend well together with a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon recommended from BV Winery.

If you’re not in the mood for wine, iced tea can also be an excellent non-alcoholic pairing. A salad with greens, grapefruit sections, sliced fennel and crumbled bacon provides a refreshing contrast to the richness of the steak.

For sides, you can serve anything from garlic mashed potatoes to grilled asparagus or baked carrots drenched in balsamic vinegar for added tanginess. A crisp green salad will also balance the rich flavor of the steak perfectly.

Remember that it’s important to consider the level of cooking of your steak when serving sides. If your steak is cooked rare, go for lighter sides that won’t overpower its tenderness like a light salad or grilled vegetables. However, if your steak is cooked well-done, more robust sides like mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables would be perfect.

With a little creativity and experimentation on your part, you can come up with endless possibilities to enjoy your flat iron steak with cabernet sauce recipe!

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

This Flat Iron Steak with Cabernet Sauce recipe is a perfect dish to make-ahead for special occasions or dinner parties. After cooking the steak, let it cool down to room temperature and then cover it tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

To reheat the steak, let it come to room temperature for 30 minutes before reheating. You can rewarm the steak either in the oven or on a stovetop. To reheat in the oven, preheat it to 350°F (175°C), place the steak on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes until heated through.

If you choose to reheat the steak on a stovetop, heat a skillet over medium-high heat, add some oil or butter and then place the steak in the skillet. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, flipping occasionally until heated through.

As for the Cabernet Sauce, you can store it separately in an airtight container for up to four days. Reheat it on a stovetop over medium heat until warmed through.

Remember that reheated steaks don’t have the same texture as freshly cooked ones, but they can still be delicious if handled properly. So make sure not to overcook them while reheating them. This recipe tastes amazing both fresh from cooking and reheated, so keep this dish in mind when planning your upcoming special event!

Tips for Perfect Results

When it comes to cooking steak, there are a few tips and tricks that can make all the difference in achieving the perfect results. Here are some things to keep in mind when making this flat iron steak with cabernet sauce recipe.

First and foremost, be sure to season your steaks liberally with salt and pepper before cooking. This will help to enhance their natural flavors and create a delicious crust on the outside. Additionally, you may want to consider using a steak seasoning blend or rub for even more flavor.

When it comes to cooking the flat iron steaks, you’ll want to use high heat and cook them quickly to avoid overcooking. A cast iron skillet or grill pan works well for this recipe, as it can get really hot and maintain its temperature.

Be sure to let your steaks rest for a few minutes after cooking before slicing into them. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, creating a tender and juicy final result.

When making the cabernet sauce, don’t be afraid to adjust the ingredient proportions according to your personal preferences. For a richer sauce, you may want to use more butter or beef broth. If you prefer a sweeter sauce, try adding a touch of balsamic vinegar or honey.

Lastly, be sure to serve this dish with some delicious sides and accompaniments. Roasted vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes, or a simple green salad would all pair nicely with this flavorful steak and wine sauce combo.

FAQ

As with any recipe, it’s natural to have some questions or concerns. To help you out, here are some answers to frequently asked questions about this Flat Iron Steak with Cabernet Sauce Recipe.

What’s the best way to cook a flat iron steak?

To prepare a delicious steak, sprinkle some salt, pepper, and steak seasoning on it. Heat a skillet and place the steaks on it, cooking them for 2-3 minutes on each side. If you want your steak to be cooked further, set the heat to low and cook for an additional 2-5 minutes. After cooking, let the steaks rest on a plate covered with foil for 5 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute inside the meat, resulting in a more flavorful and moist steak.

What wine goes best with flat iron steak?

One of my favorite wine and food pairings is a Napa cabernet with an elegant structure paired with a flat iron steak. The flavors of the wine are beautifully complemented by the steak, bringing out subtle cherry notes and balanced acidity. However, it’s important to consider the alcohol levels in the wine, as it can add a slight heat to the finish. So, choose wisely if you’re not a fan of that sensation.

Does flat iron steak need to be marinated?

As a sommelier, I recommend not using any seasoning or marinade for your flat steak. The natural marbling and flavor of the beef itself is enough to satisfy your taste buds. However, if you do insist on marinating, I suggest trying our flank steak recipe’s red wine marinade. Keep in mind that the flat steak is a smaller cut, so marinate it for around 2 hours, as it’s enough time to absorb the flavors.

Is Cabernet Sauvignon good with steak?

When it comes to pairing meaty dishes, Cabernet Sauvignon is a top contender. This wine, known for its bold black fruit flavors, makes an excellent companion to savory New York strip steaks. The tannins and acidity in Cabernet Sauvignon help to cut through the richness of the meat, creating a well-rounded and enjoyable dining experience.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, this flat iron steak with Cabernet sauce recipe is sure to be a hit at your next dinner party or special occasion. The tender and flavorful flat iron steak, seasoned to perfection and paired with a rich and delicious Cabernet sauce, is a dish that your guests won’t be able to resist.

With the flexibility to use different cuts of steak and even substitute the Cabernet Sauvignon with a dry red wine of your choice, this recipe is adaptable and versatile. Flat Iron Steak With Cabernet Sauce

Flat Iron Steak With Cabernet Sauce Recipe

I use a 1 3/4 pound of flat iron steak. I cooked it on for 4 minutes on each side and it came out rare. I do like my steak rare. My sister thought it was good but much better the next day, since it was medium rare after heating up. This is an easy recipe to make, however, next time I will add a little corn starch to the sauce to thicken it up a bit.
